Quick answer
Ford's earlier 1.0 EcoBoost and its 2.0 EcoBlue diesel both use a timing belt that runs in the engine oil. Ford has shortened both intervals to 6 years or 100,000 miles (the 1.0 EcoBoost change came through Ford's US programme in August 2026, so confirm the UK figure for your VIN). AGR Performance in Stafford replaces Ford wet belts from £800 + VAT.
Does my Ford have a wet belt?
It depends on the engine, not the model. A Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost can have a wet belt or a chain depending on its build date, and Ford didn't publish the exact month the Mk8 Fiesta switched. Garages often go by the turbo position (front of the engine bay on the belt engine), but that's trade lore. The reliable answer is the engine code from the VIN, which we can check from your registration.
| Engine | Timing drive | Typical models |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 EcoBoost (earlier belt engine) | Wet belt for the camshafts, plus a belt-driven oil pump | Fiesta Mk7 and early Mk8, Focus Mk3, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport, Mondeo, Transit Connect |
| 1.0 EcoBoost (later engine) | Timing chain | Every Puma, Focus Mk4 (2018 on), facelifted Fiesta, all 1.0 EcoBoost mild hybrids |
| 2.0 EcoBlue diesel | Wet belt | Transit, Transit Custom, Tourneo Custom, Ranger; also some Focus, Kuga, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy |
| 1.1 Ti-VCT petrol | Wet belt | Fiesta Mk8 (non-turbo) |
| 1.8 TDCi diesel (from Oct 2007) | Injection pump belt in oil; dry camshaft belt | Focus, C-Max, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy, Transit Connect |
| 1.5 EcoBlue diesel | Conventional dry cambelt (not a wet belt) | Focus, Kuga, Transit Connect and others |
Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt: interval and problems
Ford's original schedule for the belt-driven 1.0 EcoBoost was 10 years or 150,000 miles. That has since come down. In August 2026 Ford's US Customer Satisfaction Program 26L02 changed the timing belt and oil pump belt interval for affected cars to 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Ford gave the reasons as poor motor oil quality, a build-up of oil contaminants, increased oil acidity and irregular maintenance, which can damage the belt. Accelerated wear can clog the oil pump pick-up screen with delaminated belt material, causing a loss of oil pressure and eventually engine seizure.
UK handbooks printed when the car was new may still show the longer interval. If your Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max or C-Max is six years old or more and has no belt-change invoice, it's worth getting checked.
Popular Fords with the belt-in-oil 1.0 EcoBoost
- Ford Fiesta Mk7, and early Mk8 up to around 2019
- Ford Focus Mk3 (to 2018)
- Ford EcoSport, B-Max and C-Max
- Ford Mondeo 1.0 and Transit Connect 1.0
Transit, Transit Custom and Ranger: 2.0 EcoBlue wet belt
Ford cut the 2.0 EcoBlue timing belt, tensioner and idler interval to 6 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km) in 2024, down from 10 years or 150,000 miles, for Transit and Transit Custom vans and Tourneo models.
Ford said the change addresses timing belt service life affected by engine oil dilution, vehicle operating conditions and usage. Oil dilution can happen when the emissions system cleans the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Ford advises following the oil-life notifications and changing the oil when told to.
For businesses running vans that are six years old or more, the revised interval means many are already due. Call Alex with the registration and we'll confirm.
Ford wet belt warning signs
- Oil pressure warning light, even if it only flickers on a roundabout or at idle
- Engine management light with timing codes such as P0016 to P0019
- Unusual noise, rough running or loss of power
- Often nothing at all until the pick-up is already restricted

Ford wet belt questions
Does the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost have a wet belt?
The earlier 1.0 EcoBoost does. It is fitted to the Fiesta Mk7 and early Mk8, Focus Mk3, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport, Mondeo and Transit Connect. Later versions, including every Puma, the Mk4 Focus, the facelifted Fiesta and the 1.0 EcoBoost mild hybrids, use a timing chain. A 2018 to 2020 Fiesta could be either, so we check by registration.
Do all EcoBoost engines have a wet belt?
No. The wet belt is mainly an issue on the earlier 1.0 EcoBoost. Ford's 2.0 EcoBlue diesel and 1.1 Ti-VCT petrol also use a belt in oil, while many other Ford engines use a timing chain or a conventional dry belt. The engine code decides it, not the badge.
Does the Ford Puma have a wet belt?
No. Every Ford Puma 1.0 EcoBoost, mild hybrid or not, uses the newer version of the engine with a timing chain.
How often should a 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt be changed?
Ford has shortened this interval more than once. Its original schedule was 10 years or 150,000 miles; in August 2026 Ford's US programme 26L02 changed it to 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, citing oil quality and irregular maintenance. Check the current UK figure for your VIN with Ford, or give us your registration.
When should the wet belt be changed on a Transit Custom or Ranger?
For Transit, Transit Custom and Tourneo models with the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, Ford reduced the timing belt, tensioner and idler interval to 6 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), down from 10 years or 150,000 miles. Ford linked the change to oil dilution during diesel particulate filter cleaning. Ranger owners should check the current schedule for their VIN.
How much is a Ford Fiesta wet belt replacement in Stafford?
Wet belt replacement at AGR Performance starts from £800 + VAT (£960 including VAT). The exact price depends on the engine and what we find when the sump comes off. Call Alex on 07368 358943 with your registration for a quote.

Will Ford pay for my EcoBoost wet belt?
Possibly. Ford UK considers discretionary support for 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt degradation case by case. A Ford dealer must inspect the car and audit the full service history; the general criteria are a car typically under 10 years old with fewer than 150,000 miles. Check with a Ford dealer before paying for an independent repair.
What are the symptoms of a failing Ford wet belt?
Watch for the oil pressure warning light, an engine management light with camshaft or crankshaft timing codes such as P0016 to P0019, and unusual engine noise. Ford says delaminated belt material can clog the oil pump pick-up screen, leading to a loss of oil pressure and eventually engine seizure.
Which oil does a 1.0 EcoBoost need?
Use the grade and Ford specification in your handbook. The RAC gives 5W-20 as a common example for Ford engines. Because the belt runs in the oil, the wrong oil or a missed oil change can shorten belt life.
